Photonics is a key enabler for Health care

Biophotonics is a new and fast growing discipline in the health care and life sciences industry. Biophotonics studies the interaction between light and human tissue. Using multiband photonic and spectroscopic methods it is able to analyze cells and tissues by the way these living structures absorb, reflect and scatter light. This can be used to diagnose and treat diseases ranging from cancer to strokes and Alzheimer’s.

The benefits of photonics in health care are plentiful. The technology is non-invasive and has no adverse side effects, as it only deploys a light beam for diagnosis and treatment. Medical devices based on photonics technology are small and easy to handle, making the treatment highly portable. Last but not least, the cost of photonics treatment is low.

In the following health care fields is photonics technology especially promising:

Preclinical research & diagnosis
Because of its high resolution and three dimensional imaging biophotonics allows a more holistic understanding of the process by which diseases originate and progress in the human body. This knowledge could help to detect and cure diseases even before macroscopic symptoms are revealed.

Oncology
Early detection of cancer is crucial for effective treatment. For most cancers screening is ineffective, unpleasant (like colonoscopy) or simply impossible. Photonics is able to detect tumors with much more accuracy and speed and at lower costs. Photonics can also be applied in a surgical microscope or endoscope to precisely assess the degeneration of cancer tissue and offer treatments based on light to eliminate cancerous tissues.

Breath analysis
Exhaled breath contains thousands of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), that act as valuable biomarkers showing metabolic processes within a patient’s cells and tissues. Current breath biopsy analysis requires large and unwieldly equipment, that is expensive and intrusive for the patient. Photonics can make these systems much more compact so that VOC analysis could be done with a hand-held device, at much lower energy consumption and lower manufacturing costs.

Infectious diseases
Photonics is able to rapidly identify pathogens after an infection. Clinicians are already working with a mobile phone-based fluorescence imager that detects bacteria in infected wounds. The imager guides the clinician to areas that require decontamination prior to bandaging.

Neuro-monitoring and imaging
Because of its non-invasive nature photonics technology is very well suited to monitor the human brain, in particular in vivo imaging and neuro-monitoring. In this way stroke and brain injuries can be better diagnosed and treated. Photonics can also shed further light on neurovascular coupling in Alzheimer’s disease. Because of its lower cost photonics is well suited for scientific studies in healthy populations to help understand brain development and healthy ageing.

The Health Tech event consists of several workshops where endusers and suppliers will meet and discuss what is needed for Health Care and how photonics can support this.

Neuroscientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) have a powerful new state-of-the-art tool at their disposal to study diseases like Autism, Alzheimer’s, and traumatic brain injury. The Mobile Brain/Body Imaging system, or MoBI, combines virtual reality, brain monitoring, and Hollywood-inspired motion capture technology, enabling researchers to study the movement difficulties that often accompany neurological disorders and why our brains sometimes struggle while multitasking. Health in the Digital Society and the Digital society for health – New EU initiative

Estonia holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from July to December 2017. Its main focus is related to the Digital Society and the free movement of data in the European Union, as the fifth freedom of the European Union.

Today, healthcare systems are transformed by digital technologies, and most of the European policy makers have defined strategies to implement digital health solutions, even if some barriers are still to be overcome.

The Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia, supported by the European Connected Health Alliance (ECHAlliance), is thus launching the present Digital Health Society (DHS) Declaration, as a call for actions on ‘Health in the Digital Society and the Digital society for health’.

Because a holistic view is needed, this document has integrated input from all the stakeholdersinterested in the development of digital health, sharing a vision, between citizens and patients, policy makers, health professionals and healthcare services managers, scientists, companies, startups, insurers and mutual funds, investors, etc. about the strategies and actions to achieve the digital transformation of healthcare systems. Mind Labs to develop virtual humans for training purposes in healthcare

Together with 13 partners, Tilburg University will start a project totaling 7 million euros to develop virtual humans for training purposes in healthcare. The project called VIBE (Virtual Humans in the Brabant Economy) is the first project in Mind Labs, the initiative on interactive technologies and behavior set up in the Tilburg Spoorzone area.

The European Union, OP Zuid, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Province of North Brabant, and the city of Tilburg have funded this collaboration. In addition to Tilburg University (principal investigator), various partners are involved, including knowledge institutions (NHTV Breda, Fontys, ROC Tilburg), hospitals (Amphia, Maxima Medical Center and Spaarne Gasthuis), industry (BlueTea, IC3D Media, Indicia, Noldus, Samure, Visionair3D) and the Netherlands Aerospace Center. World’s first super-microsurgical intervention with ‘robot hands’ at Maastricht UMC+

Surgeons operate on lymphatic vessels of 0.3 millimeters using Microsure surgical robot

Plastic surgeons at Maastricht UMC+ have used a robotic device to surgically treat lymphedema in a patient. This is the world’s first super-microsurgical intervention with ‘robot hands’. The surgeons used the robotic device to suture vessels of 0.3 to 0.8 millimeter in the arm of the patient. The robotic device, created by Eindhoven company Microsure, enhances the surgeon’s precision, making this type of procedure easier to perform. The patient is doing well and the surgeons are enthusiastic. The news of this extraordinary operation has been announced on 27 September, at the 26th World Congress of Lymphology, in Barcelona.
