Oisin Bugter, Erasmus MC presents: ‘Optical screening for Head and Neck, Lung and Esophageal Cancer’

The presentation will be about a possible new screening method for head-and-neck, lung and esophageal cancer using reflectance spectroscopy.  Our study-design is based on the phenomenon of field-carcinogenesis. This dictates that the initial changes that lead to cancer are not only localized in the tumor, but affect the entire upper aero-digestive tract. Scattering parameters have been correlated to these field-carcinogenesis changes. We hypothesize that we can differentiate between patients with and without cancer by measuring their buccal mucosa with Multi Diameter Single Fiber Reflectance spectroscopy. Similar studies have shown promising result. Our preliminary results will be shown during the presentation.

About Van ‘t Hoff program
The Van ‘t Hoff program is a new collaborative research and innovation program, initiated by TNO, in the field of biomedical optics. The Van ‘t Hoff program develops biophotonics-based technologies to enable less invasive surgical procedures, better screening and monitoring of diseases in asymptomatic stages and better and/or personalized treatment for patients, leading to reduced healthcare costs and improved healthcare. The Van ‘t Hoff program forms an eco-system where industry, university hospitals, research institutes and health foundations collaborate in order to accelerate medical and technological innovations and their implementation in health care.

About Oisin Bugter
Oisín Bugter finished his study medicine at the University of Amsterdam in 2013. His focus during his internships was Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. After his study he worked as a resident at the dept. of Cario-Thoracic Surgery in the Erasmus MC. June this year he started his PhD research at the dept. of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
