Technology and care: the impact of use of exoskeleton for patients – Presented by Lieven De Maesschalck, Mobilab, at the Health Tech Event, on January 31, 2018, at MECC Maastricht, The Netherlands. Read the interview

The presentation with give an overview about the use of exoskeletons for patients. As introduction we start with a short description about the to walk again foundation, founded in 2003 by paraplegic former Iron Man triathlon champion Marc Herremans and his coach. His mission was to make disability sports & related rehabilitation services accessible to all. “Getting human capital out of their wheelchairs” “Because inactivity paralyzes both mind and body”. So now we are taking the next step: TWA-Post Rehabilitation Centres. An initiative by the To Walk Again Foundation, Orthopedie Van Haesendonck, AZ Herentals and Mobilab@ThomasMore. With this brand new initiative we want to set the standard for accessible, stimulating and progressive post-rehabilitation services through sports and exercise – pairing medical technology with expert medical and academic support. This presentation will give an overview of the activities already done and planned. This lecture gives information over the impact of the use  off exoskeloton on Qualitiy of Live and this in a two years follow-up study. There will be also a demo with the exoskeleton. First smart exoskeleton that recognizes the loss of balance & prevents falling, developed by Swiss researchers (Video)

smart exoskeleton

The first smart exoskeleton that recognizes the loss of balance – and prevents falling – has been developed by researchers at Scuola Sant’Anna in Italy, EPFL in Switzerland, and tested at the Rehabilitation Center “Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi” in Florence.

Wearable machines that enhance your movement and endurance no longer belong to the realm of science fiction. They are being developed today in the laboratory, and in this controlled setting, already prevent the elderly from falling.

Scientists at Scuola Sant’Anna in Italy and EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland have built a prototype of a smart, light-weight and easy-to-personalize exoskeleton that counteracts the loss of balance and promotes balance recovery after an accidental slip. This is a first in wearable machines, which are normally used to assist or enhance regular movement, instead of preventing an unexpected event like falling. The results are published on May 11th in Scientific Reports. Continue reading “First smart exoskeleton that recognizes the loss of balance & prevents falling, developed by Swiss researchers (Video)”
